Derrick Williams Teams up with Subway & Sam’s Club for Mealz on DWheelz Program & the Detroit Public Schools
Off the field this summer, Derrick Williams has been around town helping out other non-profit organizations aside from his own including the Boys & Girls Club of South Oakland County, the Royal Oak Sandlot League and several churches in the D.C. area helping rebuild houses near his hometown.
On Saturday, June 12 in Royal Oak, Michigan over 500 fans came out to the first ever Mealz on DWheelz Celebrity Softball game presented by Sam’s Club. In attendance were Detroit Lions favorites including Louis Delmas, Cliff Avril, Aaron Brown, Sammie Hill, Zack Follett, and new additions to Detroit Jahvid Best and Willie Young, along with several other players from the 2010 Lions team. Lions All-Pro Alumni Herman Moore and Lomas Brown stepped in to help coach as well with other local Detroit celebrities and personalities. All monies raised from the celebrity game directly benefit the Mealz on DWheelz Charity Fund which will visit several Detroit schools throughout the 2010 NFL Season.
“This summer has been great. I am looking forward to my second season here in Detroit and now that I’ve been here a year I really wanted to get involved in the community and with the kids. When I was young I remember NFL Players that would come to my school and talk to us or spend some of their time with my class or the Boys and Girls Clubs and now that I’m in this position as an NFL player, I want to do what I can to give back and give these kids an experience that they will remember just like I had” says Derrick Williams.
This year, Derrick will visit various 4th grade classrooms throughout the Detroit Public School System having the students turn in essays written on how important good sportsmanship and respect to others is in athletics. While Williams is in the classroom, he and Subway (Dortch Enterprises) have teamed up to bring in healthy meals for all the kids including subs, apples and 100% juice drinks along with Subway specials the kids are able to take home for their family for all to benefit from the Mealz on DWheelz initiative. Each child will also be able to bring home a healthy snack pack sponsored by Sam’s Club.
Essays from each classroom will be academically graded by teachers and read by Derrick to determine a classroom winner. The class with the combined highest average grades will get to attend a Detroit Lions game on behalf of Mealz on DWheelz and each child will receive an autographed Williams shirt.
The Mealz on DWheelz kickoff will be October 5, 2010 at Ronald Brown Academy at 11:15am.
